Growth Mindset

Torkington is a Growth Mindset School. We adopted this in 2012.

Why the Growth Mindset?

At Torkington, a Growth Mindset is not just a theory we teach; it is the heartbeat of our school culture. We believe that intelligence and ability are not fixed traits, but qualities that can be developed through dedication, resilience, and a positive attitude toward challenges.

By fostering this environment, we empower every pupil to embrace the power of "Yet"—the understanding that while something may be difficult now, they simply haven’t mastered it yet.

How We Embed Growth Mindset daily?

Our commitment to developing resilient learners is woven into the fabric of every school day through several key initiatives:

1. The Weekly Focus Word

Each week, the entire school community rallies around a specific "Focus Word." These words—such as Perseverance, Resilience, Curiosity, or Self-Belief —are introduced in assemblies and explored within the classroom. This provides a shared language for pupils and staff to discuss their learning journeys and encourages pupils to intentionally practice these traits in their work and play.

2. Reflection and Metacognition

Growth Mindset is not just about the start of a task; it is about the journey. At the conclusion of lessons, pupils are given dedicated time to reflect on their learning process. We ask our pupils to consider:

What did I find challenging today?
How did I overcome a "learning pit"?
What mistake did I make that helped me learn something new? This practice ensures that reflection becomes a natural habit, allowing pupils to take ownership of their personal progress.

3. Celebrating the Journey: Growth Mindset of the Week

While we value academic achievement, we place an equal importance on the process of learning. Every Friday, during our Celebration Assembly, we honour individuals who have truly shone by demonstrating a remarkable Growth Mindset.

The "Growth Mindset of the Week" award is presented to pupils who have shown exceptional grit, supported a peer through a challenge, or displayed a transformative attitude toward a difficult piece of work. It is one of the most anticipated moments of our week, highlighting to the whole school that effort and character are the true keys to success.
