Early Years

Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Torkington Primary School: Where Curiosity Begins
Welcome to the start of your child’s educational journey. At Torkington Primary School, we are committed to providing a high-quality early education that gives every child the best possible start.

Our approach is uniquely balanced: we combine strong foundations in Reading, Writing, and Maths with early years best practice. From Nursery through to Reception, we ensure your child feels happy, safe, and inspired to learn.

Our Curriculum
Our curriculum is designed to ignite curiosity while building the foundational knowledge needed for Year 1 and beyond. It is based on the EYFS Statutory Framework and Development Matters, tailored to the unique interests of our children.

  • Concept-Driven: We use focus texts and continuous provision to teach key skills.
  • Future-Ready: Our progression documents bridge the gap between EYFS and the National Curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2.
  • Language-Rich: High-quality interactions are at the heart of everything we do to support communication and thought.

The Power of Play & Environment
We believe that learning through play is the most meaningful way for young children to develop.

  • Enabling Environments: Our indoor and outdoor classrooms are designed for exploration. Children can access resources independently, following their own interests.
  • Deep Involvement: We provide periods of uninterrupted play, allowing children to become deeply immersed in their discoveries.

Outdoor Learning & Muddy Faces
We place a massive emphasis on the "great outdoors" to develop the whole child.

  • Free-Flow Access: Children can choose to learn inside or outside for large parts of the day.
  • Exceptional Spaces: Our outdoor areas encourage risk-taking, physical health, and confidence.
  • Muddy Faces Sessions: During the Autumn term, our classes explore our on-site "woods." From den building to bug hunting, children learn teamwork and problem-solving in a natural setting.

How We Teach: Interactions & Growth Mindset
Much of our teaching happens in the moment. Our skilled adults observe and sensitively join children’s play to extend their thinking and language. We foster the Characteristics of Effective Learning:

  • Playing and Exploring (Engagement)
  • Active Learning (Motivation)
  • Creating and Thinking Critically (Thinking)

This is closely linked to our school-wide Growth Mindset ethos—encouraging children to have a go, stay concentrated, and embrace challenges.

Seamless Transition
By the time our children leave EYFS, they are confident, resilient, and happy learners. Because our approach is consistent, children move seamlessly between year groups, entering Year 1 emotionally and academically ready to "hit the ground running."
